The Hotter'n Hell Hundred
(aka the Pretty Warm 78)

Paul Armstrong and I went to Wichita Falls, TX to ride in the Hotter'n Hell Hundred. We watched a really bad movie, camped out, and spent 15 minutes after the 7:30 start moving with the crowd of 10,000 up to the starting line. At a little after 12:00, we got to a place where the 100-mile route was closed. It was TOO HOT, they said! I was wondering if we found the wrong race or something. Anyway, we finished up with the shortcut since the police wouldn't let us do the full 100. (There were quite a few ambulances driving around, I have to admit.) Most of the people had chosen the shorter routes. But, being the purists we are, we were quite disgusted with those wimp Texans who let the lawyers take over their race. After our 77 mile ride we went swimming at Lake Arrowhead and headed home. I'm going to suggest to the Wichita Fall-ians that they change the name of their ride to the Pretty Warm 78.
